Mosaic Stained Glass Quilt Instructions Supplies: 1. Steam a Seam 2 Light or other 2 sided fusible. 2. A glue stick for appliqued pieces that don’t stick well. 3. A piece of black fabric for background plus a couple inches on all sides (you’ll only see it as grout). 4. Choose ”whole objects” printed on fabric which you want to showcase in your design. I used flowers, leaves, and insects (which were printed on black fabric so they didn’t need to be fussy cut and blended nicely in the design). Whole means no hidden parts. 5. A variety of 4 or so batiks that read like solids and 2-3 small print fabrics incorporating the batiks color scheme. Batiks work well because their edges don’t fray and they have subtle color/hue changes for interest. Choose a thread color for step 10 in your predominant batik color. 6. Small sharp scissors. 7. A stiƯ foamboard covered with flannel or similar design/ironing surface. 8. Small iron, such as Steamfast. 9. A presser sheet or parchment paper for ironing fusible onto fabric and a dryer sheet or Ez-oƯ to clean your iron if errors occur. 10. When your design is finished, your homework will be to straight stitch parallel lines across it, using an equal width. I use painter’s tape to mark the quilt in fourths to keep my stitching straight. You want to start quilting in the middle of the quilt and then stitch the next row going in the opposite direction. Keep stitching like this to the top and bottom of the quilt to avoid distortion. Design Preparation: 1. Pull oƯ one side of the fusible and iron it to the back of your “whole objects” chosen in step 4 above. Keep sticky substances oƯ your iron (see step 9 above). 2. Cut batiks chosen in step 5 above in strips of about 3” by 18” and put fusible on the back, making sure fusible comes to the edge of the fabric. 3. Add fusible to the back of your small print fabrics. You won’t need much of these. They are sprinkled in for interest. Design will be Done in Class – Please Bring Your Supplies
Facing and Faux Flange Binding Class Supplies for Class: 1. Quilted and squared off Quilt 2. 2.5” strips that match your backing (2 are 2” longer than width of quilt and 2 are 2” shorter than length of quilt). 3. Sewing machine with quarter inch foot and quilting foot. 4. Thread, scissors, pins, clips, iron 5. To practice faux flange binding, bring 2 strips of coordinating fabric and a 3 layer quilted scrap with sharply cut sides and a 90 degree angle so you can practice making a mitered corner. The strips should be long enough to cover 2 sides of your scrap. The binding strip will be 1.75”. The flange strip that peeks out will be 2.25” and should be a solid color (since only ¼” will be seen). Thread should be the color of your flange fabric. |
