Working with simple four patch blocks, each student will go through a variety of exercises to make stitched sample blocks. Participants will bring fabric squares from their own stash to work with in class. Experimenting with contrast, color, texture, to name a few, you will stitch together blocks in class which can be sewn into a quilt top later, or made into a sample booklet for future reference. This class is a favorite among all quilters, from beginners to advanced, traditional to contemporary.

–50 to 100 squares of fabric, each one different in a wide variety of prints and colors–lights, mediums, darks–the more the better, but avoid solids. Basically you want to re-create your stash. Cut the squares all the same size, anywhere from 4” to 6 ½”. (If you don’t want to cut into your fabrics, there are several precuts for sale online. I found a sets of 100 5” squares for around $15. Usually students will trade as well, which is always fun!)

–Neutral piecing thread

–Sewing machine and accessories, including ¼” piecing foot

–Basic sewing supplies, ie. seam ripper, pins, etc

–18” square of felt for design layout…I prefer gray, but white or black will do, no colors.

The size really depends on the size squares you are bringing—you need to

Be able to lay out a four patch. Ex: using 4” squares the felt can be 15” square.

–Paper and pen

OPTIONAL:

 Color Wheel

 Red and/or green value finder

Plexiglass extension table for sewing machine

Pattern and fabric for quilt project or top that you feel isn’t quite right

Color-wise for class discussion, time permitting

Bring a lunch, if you can.
