Flamingos Love

Come join me for a fun class in collage quilting. You will create the "Flamingo Love" quilt. Attendees will learn the technique of collage quilting, raw edge applique and some tips on free motion quilting. I am looking forward to working with you and seeing your version of "Flamingo Love".

Materials needed

  • Lots of scraps of pink and orange shades ccan be printed fabric or batiks
  • Fat 1/8th of a darker pink (body)
  • Fat 1/8th of a light pink (head)
  • Fat 1/8th of printed black and white
  • Fabric for Backing (medium) 17 x 21
  • Teal or water like fabric for the water
  • Green fabric for the palm trees
  • Brown or purple fabric for the palm trees
  • Buff or lighter fabric for the sand
  • Blue fabric for the sky
  • Pieces of muslin 17 x 21 inches and 2 pieces - 12 x 12 inches

 

Supplies needed

  • Batting your choice (I used 80/20)
  • Light Box/ or a window
  • Thread - various colors
  • Extension cord
  • Safety Pins
  • Paper and fabric scissors
  • Scotch tape / painters tape
  • Elmer's school glue - I like the purple glue stick
  • Applique pressing sheet or freezer paper
  • Sewing machine
  • Fabric Paints (if you choose to paint your sky)
  • Fusible web

  • Kits with pattern and fabrics for applique (trees and flamingo's) you supply background fabric, batting fabric for $10 cash only

Printmaking and painting on fabric

Come learn to monoprint and paint your own fabric. Bring out your inner child, let loose and create. Learn techniques to keep a soft hand in the fabric you paint.

Items needed for class

  • Muslin fabric cut into (8) 8 x 12 inch pieces - doesn't have to be perfect
  • Apron for painting

 

There is a $10 supply fee for this class.


Fun with portrait art quilts

So, you say you're not an artist. All of us are artist and with the right tecniques you will create art portraits. This is a 2-day class. Day 1 you will learn how to turn your photo into a drawing and then turn the drawing into a pattern. This will include how to use 2 new software programs for your computer. Day 2 - in the morning you will learn how to paint the face and skin and collaging your portrait art quilt. In the afternoon you will be thread painting to enhance your portrait. Come ready to have fun and work...no dull moment in this class.

Supplies needed

  • A picture to work from, you can send this picture to me @ [email protected]  before the 1st day to see if this picture will work for your 1st portrait art quilt.
  • You will need a laptop computer.
  • Download the following software prior to the 1st day of class
    • PosterRazor (free to download)
  • Flashdrive (this is to save your work and have your photo pattern printed)
  • Pencil/pen
  • Watercolor paints and small brush (small watercolor box from the Dollar Store)
  • Scissors for cutting paper and fabric.
  • Copier paper and freezer paper (willshow both techniques)
  • Sharpie marker fine tip
  • Scotch Tape
  • Muslin for foundation (size of final project plus 2 inches per side)
  • Light box
  • Gather together fabric scraps. Think in value when choosing fabric.
  • Pattern
  • Muslin quilt sandwich 8”x 12”
  • Straight and safety pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Free motion quilting foot
  • Elmer's washable school glue or glue stick (purple works best)
  • Fabric scraps - gather together fabric scraps. Think in value when choosing fabrics.  Look at your picture for inspiration on fabric (remember look for values of each color - tone on tone, batiks, printed fabric all work together) think of what colors you want in your quilt. Flesh tone fabrics for face, hands, etc. or you can paint these features. We are going tor a painterly effect with this quilt. 
  • Backing fabric - larger than your muslin foundation piece
  • Batting - larger than your muslin foundation piece (mattress pads, double batting, etc)
  • Thread (choose colors that will enhance your picture) Also think value in your thread choices.
  • Bobbins - wind lots at least 4 - color of your choice or in matching colors to your thread choice. 

 

There will be a $5 fee to cover printing charges.
