How to Design an Art Quilt Using Mixed Media
An art quilt is an expression of an idea or emotion using fabric, and whatever other media desired which will convey the idea or emotion to the viewer. The use of art principles including composition, value, overlapping, variation and repetition will make the process of the art quilt more understandable and success more frequent. To begin the process you need to choose the idea or thought you want to tell.
Exploring Surface Design with
Thickened MX Procion Dye
This class provides an overview of several ways to change the look of your fabric using thickened MX procion dye. Three things determine how well the dye is bonded to fabric when hand dyeing; amount of water is small, the time is relatively short and the soda is poured over the fabric and dye in a solution. For the greater control needed to do surface design the amount of water must be reduced so the soda ash is soaked into the fabric, the fabric is dried, thickened dye placed on it and it is left to batch for a longer time.(overnight)
Quad Block Patriotic Quilt
This quilt can be made with patriotic or other fabrics. The technique is combining 4 unrelated 6 inch blocks into a master quad-block; then turning those to make different settings for a quilt.
Every Which Way
Learn many ways to make a half-square triangle unit including a fast accurate way that enables you to make many to swap with the other class members. The first part of the class we will generate the units then we will learn how to effectively use them in a quilt block generated in EQ7 which makes a beautiful quilt. You will receive a copy of the block pattern and the quilt pattern. A supply list is available.
This class demonstrates how to create a "faux" bargello quilt without having to make strip sets. This technique was developed by our own Cena Harmon who graciously is allowing me to teach it. FUN!
Basic Hand Dyeing
This class consists of learning the basic procedures for dyeing any cellulose fabric; including cotton, linen, rayon, hemp and bamboo. You can also use this method to dye some colors on silk. You will do the following effects in the workshop: tower dyeing, value gradation, or over-dyeing. You will dye approximately 6 yards of fabric to use as you would like in your quilts! You need to wear OLD clothes and shoes when taking this class and the class needs to be held where the floor and tables can be protected with newspaper or plastic in case of a spill. This is a technique class and does not generate a finished quilt top. There is a $5 kit fee to cover the dye and chemicals. Supply list available.
Painting on Fabrics using Tsukineko Inks
In this class you will be taught how to control and use the inks to paint a picture on fabric. You can use any simple line drawing to do your first picture or one will be provided. Simple coloring books or other clip art can be used. This is a technique class and does not generate a finished quilt top. There is a $5 kit fee to cover the cloth for the project and the ink. Supply list is available.
