Learn to make a scrappy New York Beauty block by paper piecing all those points and then setting in a few curves. The sewing is not as difficult as it might look! This is a great class for acquiring confidence with color.
Explore the possibilities by making a variety of New York Beauty blocks with various sized points and arcs. Mix and match the 8-inch blocks or choose a favorite and work with it. All points are paper pieced and all curves are sewn, no appliqué.
This class is an overview of various machine-quilting techniques. Spend the morning straight-line quilting a small project from your stash, nothing special, one of those UFOs or some orphan blocks stitched into a small quilt. After lunch, experiment with various free motion techniques on a self-prepared muslin sandwich, approximately 30" square.
This elegant clamshell quilt is nothing more than an uneven log cabin. The trick is the coloration and the set. The paper-pieced 5-1/2 inch finished block is small enough to utilize men's ties to create the shells if desired. Traditional cottons or silks would also be appropriate.
INTRODUCTION to PET PORTRAITS
CLASS DESCRITION: Learn how to transform a favorite pet photo into a pattern to recreate your pet in cloth using machine appliqué. All students will practice on “Sammy” in class to learn the technique. No sewing in class, but sewing will be discussed and some techniques demonstrated. Hand appliqué enthusiasts can adapt pattern to their favorite method.* All day class, 9:00– 3:00.
SUPPLIES:
- Bring several 8x10 photos of your pet on ordinary copy paper. You can zoom in and crop a photo to feature a head shot. Bring a color copy and a black and white if possible. Select several different photos so we will have some options to choose from.
- GOOD Fabric scissors and paper scissors
- Fine point Sharpie marker
- Wonder Under lightweight fusible (MUCH easier to use than other products for this technique!)
- Tracing Paper, 14” x 17”
- Appliqué pressing sheet, optional
- Straight pins
- Iron & pressing surface
- Small plastic container to keep track of appliqué pieces
For class exercise, you will need three values-- a light, medium and dark—plus an accent, approximately fat quarter sizes. The three values can be from one color family--or not! They can be realistic, or NOT! Batiks and mottled fabrics are good for a realistic rendering while brights, plaids, and prints make great fantasy, fun-filled pieces. The choice is yours. Also, bring some small scraps of white, black and brown for eyes. You can choose a background fabric later.
*Hand appliqué people can substitute their favorite template making supplies if they do not want to work with fusibles and a machine.
